EUROPEAN BEE-EATER Merops apiaster 27cm

Spectacular, unmistakeable multicoloured bird, slim and elongated with large head. Blue underparts and flight feathers, orange-brown upperparts with yellow shoulders, yellow throat outlined in black. Bill long, down-curved, eye red. Central tail feathers protrude as long spike. Juvenile a little paler and drabber, green tinted on upperparts. Very graceful in flight, pointed wings are pale underneath with black trailing edge. Call a pleasant rolling prrrt. Catches insect prey on the wing. Gregarious, nests in colonies in burrows dug into sand-banks or riversides. Open scrubby countryside in warm lowlands with plenty of insect life. A widespread summer visitor.
